How to Stream Nintendo Switch 2 on Twitch

The Switch 2 can't stream to Twitch by itself. Here's the capture card setup that gets you live, step by step.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time arrives on Switch 2 on November 5, rebuilt from the ground up, and plenty of streamers will want to play it live. If you're wondering how to stream Switch 2 on Twitch, the short answer is a capture card and a computer. Here's the whole setup, step by step, plus the fixes for the black screen everyone hits once.

Can you stream Switch 2 to Twitch directly?

No. Unlike PS5 and Xbox, the Switch 2 has no built-in way to broadcast to Twitch. GameChat shares your screen with friends, not with a public audience. To stream, you send the console's picture into a capture card, and from there into streaming software like OBS on your PC or Mac.

That's good news for your stream. Going through OBS means you get your webcam, your mic, alerts and an interactive overlay on screen, which a console's built-in broadcasting can't give you anyway.

What you need

  • Your Switch 2, its dock and an HDMI cable.
  • A capture card with passthrough, so you can keep playing on your TV while it captures.
  • A PC or Mac running OBS (free) or other streaming software.
  • A mic, and a webcam if you want your face on stream.

How to stream Switch 2 on Twitch, step by step

  • 1. Dock it. The Switch 2 only sends a picture over HDMI in TV mode, through the dock. In handheld or tabletop mode there's nothing to capture.
  • 2. Wire it up. HDMI from the dock into the capture card's input. HDMI from the card's output into your TV. Then connect the card to your computer by USB.
  • 3. Skip the HDCP hunt. The Switch 2 has no HDCP setting to change, so the picture should come straight through.
  • 4. Add it to OBS. Add a Video Capture Device source and choose your capture card. Make sure the game's sound comes through too; some cards need an audio source of their own.
  • 5. Set your output. Twitch's broadcasting guidelines recommend about 6,000 Kbps for 1080p at 60 frames per second. If your upload is slower, 720p60 at a lower bitrate looks great for most Switch games.
  • 6. Test it. Run a short test stream and watch it back before you go live for real.

Sound, camera and scenes

  • Play on your TV, not the OBS preview. The preview runs a little behind the game. Passthrough gives your TV the picture with no delay, so play there.
  • Check the game's sound. It travels over HDMI with the picture. In OBS, make sure your capture source carries audio, and keep it under your mic so chat can hear you over the music.
  • Mind GameChat. Friends' voices in GameChat play through the console, so they can end up on your stream. Let them know before you go live.
  • Set up three scenes. A "starting soon" screen, your gameplay with a webcam in the corner, and a "be right back" screen for breaks. Switching between them makes even a small stream feel polished.

Fixing a black screen

If OBS shows nothing, you're not alone. Elgato and AVerMedia both list the same fixes for Switch 2:

  • Turn off 120 Hz output in the console's TV settings.
  • Turn off ALLM (auto low latency mode) and Match TV Power State.
  • Use the dock's HDMI port, not a USB-C adapter.
  • Unplug and reconnect each cable, then restart the capture source in OBS.

Picking a capture card

In TV mode the Switch 2 can output up to 4K at 60 frames per second, and up to 120 fps at 1080p or 1440p. Look for a card with 4K60 passthrough, so your TV still gets the full picture while you stream at 1080p. If you want 120 Hz on your TV while you stream, check that the card passes 120 Hz through too.

Elgato's Game Capture 4K S and Game Capture Neo both pass through 4K60. The Game Capture 4K X uses HDMI 2.1 for high refresh rates. AVerMedia recommends its ELITE GO for Switch 2, with full 4K60 passthrough. Check each maker's page for what your setup needs.

Bring chat into the game

Nintendo games are made for shared moments: a boss that won't go down, a puzzle that takes ten tries, a jump you finally land. Give chat a way to be part of them. With Stream Stickers, viewers drop animated stickers with sound right onto your stream, and Throwables let them hurl things at the screen when you fall off that ledge again.

Because your Switch 2 already runs through OBS, adding it takes a few minutes: install the extension, drag your browser source into OBS and send a test sticker. The install guide walks you through it. Anyone can use Global Stickers and upload custom stickers for free. Charging Bits, Super Stickers and A.I. text-to-speech need you to be a Twitch Affiliate or Partner.

Thinking about a series? Ocarina of Time is a game plenty of viewers grew up with, which makes it a great fit for a weekly playthrough. Post a schedule, invite longtime fans to share tips (no spoilers) in chat, and let first-timers discover it with you.

Ready for November 5

Set it all up a day or two before the games you're excited about, and run one test. Then all that's left on launch day is the game, your chat and whatever they throw at you.
